Hello all, and happy Thursday!
(Surely you knew it was the official data privacy week?)
There may not be as many traditions associated with data privacy week as there are with, say, New Year’s, Christmas, or Hannukah, but the Osano team is doing its best to celebrate anyways.
On the Osano LinkedIn page, you’ll find us counting down our favorite privacy-related films (coming in at #2 today is the clairvoyant crime thriller Minority Report). Plus, we’re inviting folks to come play Privacy Bingo with us for the week! Yes, there is a prize involved. Personally, I think I’ve already got a bingo, but our legal counsel has advised me its unethical for me to participate.
How are you celebrating data privacy week? Might I suggest diving into all the news to be found in the Privacy Insider?
Best,
Arlo

Italy's data protection authority, Garante, is asking Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek for formal responses on its GDPR compliance. The Chinese AI firm emerged as a fierce competitor to industry leaders like OpenAI this weekend, when it launched a model that competes with leading AI-fueled chatbots at a fraction of the cost. Garante has been no stranger to enforcing against AI companies. It briefly banned ChatGPT over alleged privacy violations and fined its parent company OpenAI €15 million.
On January 24th, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) proposed 1:1 consent rule was set to go into effect on January 27th. The rule would have prohibited organizations from using a consumer’s single consent to receive phone calls as blanket consent for multiple vendors, instead requiring each vendor to secure consent under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. However, the FCC suddenly postponed the order by a year. Minutes later, the Eleventh Circuit Court vacated the rule.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on artificial intelligence that will revoke past government policies his order says “act as barriers to American AI innovation.” The new order sets out to track down and review “all policies, directives, regulations, orders, and other actions taken” as a result of former President Joe Biden’s sweeping AI executive order of 2023, which Trump recently rescinded. Any of those Biden-era actions must be suspended if they don’t fit Trump’s new directive that AI should “promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.”
Data protection regulators, particularly in Europe, appear to be taking a tough line with large tech firms over data privacy violations, issuing multi-million dollar and euro fines. But these fines aren’t being paid. Just 0.6% of fines levied by the Irish Data Protection Commission between 2020 and the end of October 2024 had been paid as of December 2024. How can regulators improve financial penalization? Are fines even an effective deterrent for big tech?
Speaking at the recent IAB Annual Leadership Meeting in Palm Springs, Senator Ron Wyden detailed his stance on data privacy, a federal privacy law, consumer data brokers, and more. Among these talking points, Wyden emphasized the bipartisan nature of data privacy as well as its national security implications.
