Hello all, and happy Thursday!
It’s an exciting time to be in privacy—whether you’re a privacy professional, a legal expert working in the privacy space, a compliance professional, or in a privacy-adjacent role, you’re part of the conversation that’s shaping the future of this industry.
But not everyone’s voice is being equally heard. And sometimes, professionals don’t even know where to find the communities and conversations that are shaping the future of privacy.
If the conversation around the future of privacy only involves some voices and not others, we shouldn’t be surprised to find the field weaker and less effective at protecting our rights than we hoped.
That’s why Osano is launching a Women in Privacy Meetup series!
Every month, we’ll host an event to boost women’s voices in privacy and build up this vital segment of the privacy community. Our inaugural meetup is February 12th, with the theme of “Sex, Lies, and AI”—the group will be discussing the intersection between dating apps, privacy, and AI. I wholeheartedly encourage any woman working or just interested in privacy to register, which you can do here.
Best,
Arlo
Feeling flummoxed by the eight new US privacy laws going into effect in 2025? We get it. As a privacy software company, we’ve fielded a lot of questions from our audience about 2025’s privacy laws. To help clarify things, we’ve collected and answered the most frequently asked questions here.
With more privacy laws to keep track of in 2025, you may be expecting a bigger workload than last year. That doesn’t have to be the case. In this webinar, Osano’s Cait Ward and Chris Simpson teach you how to move faster, gain visibility, shorten the time to deploy banners and assessments, and automate in all the right places.
At first glance, the headline looks like a typo: The EU rules against the EU…for breaching EU data protection law? But you read it right. Find out what this case means for compliance with EU data privacy laws.
It's a new year, and for privacy teams, that means a new budget. The question is: How do you spend that budget to get the most bang for your buck? Osano’s Head of Privacy and Chief Customer Officer walk through the most and least effective ways to spend your privacy budget.

Non-profit privacy advocacy group "None of Your Business" (noyb) has filed six complaints against TikTok, AliExpress, SHEIN, Temu, WeChat, and Xiaomi, for unlawfully transferring European user's data to China and infringing the GDPR. Specifically, noyb claims that the companies are in violation of Chapter V of the GDPR, including a failure to adhere to general transfer principles, a lack of safeguards, and a failure to conduct adequate impact assessments.
The Federal Trade Commission finalized changes to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule to set new requirements around the collection, use, and disclosure of children’s personal information. These changes include requiring parents’ opt-in consent for targeted advertising and third-party disclosures, limiting data retention, and increasing transparency around COPPA’s Safe Harbor programs.
The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) and South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) have agreed to collaborate on privacy and data protection efforts. This includes sharing best practices, knowledge, and information on procedures and methods, as well as annual enforcement plans and activities. Outside of the EU, California and South Korea are among the most active regions for data privacy.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta recently issued two legal advisories on the use of AI, including in the healthcare context. The first advises consumers and entities about their rights and obligations under the state’s consumer protection, civil rights, competition, and data privacy laws with respect to the use of AI, while the second provides guidance specific to healthcare entities about their obligations under California law regarding the use of AI.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order rescinding the 2023 directive issued by former President Joe Biden, which had outlined measures guiding the development and use of AI technologies, including the establishment of chief AI officers in major federal agencies and frameworks for tackling ethical and security risks. This revocation likely will raise risks related to AI ethics and data privacy.
